The Salt Mines of Maras

The salt mines of Maras is one of the places that takes advantage of the natural resources of the Sacred Valley. It offers an impressive view of the technology that the Incas achieved.
 
For the extraction of salt, the Incas used more than 3,000 wells. Each well is filled with very salty water from a natural source. The solidification of the water is expected to be able to extract the salt. Nowadays these saltwater wells are exploited by 800 families from the local communities of Maras.

Moray

A few kilometers from Maras is the Moray Archaeological Complex with its surprising agricultural terraces.
 
This place was used by the Inca Empire as an agricultural research center. It is made up of 20 different microclimates that vary in a temperature of 15°C between the highest terrace and the lowest. Thanks to this laboratory they successfully managed to grow various products throughout the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary

Half DayCusco - Salt Mines of Cusco - Moray

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco to take you in our private transport along the route from Chinchero to Maras. During the tour you will be able to observe the natural beauty of the Peruvian countryside, andean farms, animals and the snow-capped peaks of the Andes.
Our first stop will be at the Salineras de Maras. Accompanied by our local expert guide, you will be able to observe and learn more about the traditional method of salt extraction that is still practiced by the inhabitants of this town.
After observing the salt mines of Maras we will go to the Archaeological Complex of Moray. If you do not have a ticket here you can buy an entrance ticket. Our guide will give you a guided tour of the different circular terraces, where he will explain in more detail how the Incas used it and how the temperature varies between each terrace.
After visiting these impressive places, our transport will be waiting for us to return to the city of Cusco.
