Tour Details

The snow-capped Salkantay, whose name comes from the Quechua meaning “Wild Mountain”, is located in the Cordillera de Vilcanota in the Andes of southern Peru at about 6,271 meters above sea level. It is the second largest snow-capped mountain in Cusco after the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.

The 5-day trek from Salkantay to Machu Picchu is an adventure full of varied landscapes. Each town visited is full of culture and traditions. Also impressive views from the top of the mountains. You will enjoy varied climates from cold to warm, glaciers, lakes such as Lake Humantay and Lake Salkantay, the Amazon jungle with its exuberant flora and fauna and the most famous trail to reach the fortress of Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Soraypampa - Humantay Lake - Soyorcocha

We will take you up in our private transportation from your hotel early in the morning and bring you to Mollepata. A tiny traditional town where we will stop for a nice breakfast.

We’ll continue our journey by bus to Soraypampa, the trek’s beginning point, after breakfast. We’ll meet the cooks and muleteers who will accompany us on our journey and assist us with our belongings here.

We’ll walk for two hours to get to the Humantay Lagoon, where we’ll realx in its crystal blue waters. We will return to Soraypampa after visiting the lagoon and then hike to Salkantay Pampa for lunch with a spectacular view of the glacier.

After lunch we will begin the descent down the mountain to where our first camp is located, Soyorcocha. Is located on a glacial moraine with a small lake. This place is at the foot of the snowy Salkantay so you will see impressive views of the snowy Salkantay while we arrange the tents where you will rest after a delicious and comforting dinner.

Day 2Soyorcocha - Huayracmachay - Collpapampa

Before continuing on with our tour, you will be treated to a great brunch. Then we will continue our trip to El Paso Salkantay, the highest point on the route, where we will observe unusual species such as vizcachas and Andean chinchillas.

We will be able to witness amazing vistas of snow-capped mountains in the neighboring valleys, such as the Humantay Mountain, after we reach the Salkantay Pass.

After seeing in these sights, we’ll start descending for about 3 hours to Huayracmachay, where we’ll have lunch.

After lunch we will continue the walk until entering a small valley where you will feel the change in temperature and the landscape. As you descend, you will see more colorful landscapes full of vegetation and flowers such as orchids and a variety of animals.

Day 3Collpapampa – Wiñaypocco – Lluscamayo – Lucmabamba

We will continue our walk after a great breakfast along a path that will lead us through the Santa Teresa Valley, descending to the edge of the jungle with a spectacular view of the Alto Salkantay River’s beautiful scenery.

We’ll keep going down until we reach Sahuayaco Beach, which is lush with greenery, fruit trees, avocado, bananas, and coffee plants. We’ll take a break and eat lunch here.

We will continue our journey after lunch until we reach Lucmabamba, where we will be able to witness crops of many coffee varieties as well as their preparation, which you will carry out and enjoy.

Finally after this experience we will go to our camp. It is close to the place. Upon arrival we will have dinner and rest in the tents already prepared.

Day 4Lucmabamba – Llactapata Inca ruins – Aguas Calientes

We will continue our walk after a hearty breakfast, ascending through the jungle and then descending to the Inca ruins of Llactapata, where the citadel of Machu Picchu can be seen.

We will continue our trip traveling downhill to the Machu Picchu Hydroelectric Station, where we will halt for lunch, after seeing these ruins with our guide.

Finally, we will board a train to Aguas Calientes town, where we will transport you to your accommodations where you can relax and enjoy a fantastic meal.

Day 5Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu

Early in the morning the hotel staff will give you a box of snacks. Then you will be transferred to the bus terminal where you will board the bus that will take you to the citadel of Machu Picchu.

Once at the entrance to the citadel, your passport will be verified. So bring your original passport. After passing the control we will begin our tour of the citadel with our guide who will explain more about the Inca Empire.

Our guide will explain more about the lifestyle of the Incas and the function that each area of ​​the citadel fulfilled. At the end of the tour you will have free time to explore the citadel on your own. If you have booked a trek to Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountain, our guide will be directing you to the entrance.

We recommend going to Puerta del Sol. This place offers spectacular views of the citadel and its surroundings. It is the entry point to the citadel for those who walk the Inca Trail.

After this experience, you will board the bus back to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival you will have free time so you can have lunch or walk around the town.

Finally, you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Here you will board our private transport and will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco.
